You might have not thought of using chai spices when baking donuts, but they’re an absolute delight! It’s yet to become a coffeehouse staple, but for those who enjoy the taste of chai without getting the caffeine hit, we might have just the thing.
Donuts are typically fried or baked batter with a hole in the middle. Usually plain donut doughs are topped with sugar, different flavors of icing, and other toppings to enhance the taste. But with the recipe we’ll share with today that uses Chai Up’s Masala Powder Mix, the taste is incorporated within the batter itself giving a more complex and yummy flavor profile! Donuts are a top-tier dessert, so much so that CBS News has reported about 96% of Americans like donuts!
This will be an instant hit to anyone who already loves chai tea lattes or masala chai and is a great gateway dessert for anyone who’s never tried masala chai before!

Masala chai donuts have a very unique twist to the classic donut and can be just as revolutionary as the coffee cake. This recipe hasn’t made it to mainstream coffee shops so you might just be the first to try this culinary innovation.
Another great thing about using Chai Up’s masala chai powder mix is that you can use as much or as little as you want depending on your taste level. This recipe can take about 15 minutes of prep time, 10 to 15 minutes of baking time, and 10 more minutes of glazing and final garnishing.
Masala Chai Spice Mix Recipe For Donuts: Ingredients
- 1 cup of all purpose flour
- ½ cup of brown sugar (light or dark will do and if you only have white sugar at home, that works too!)
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon of Chai Up’s Masala Chai Powder Mix
- 1/2 cup of water
- Heat up ½ cup of water in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Add a teaspoon of Chai Up’s Masala Powder Mix and brew it for at least 3 to 5 minutes.
- Sift the liquid in case there are any bits that wouldn’t dissolve.
- ¼ teaspoon of salt
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
Chai Flavored Donut Glaze: Ingredients
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- ¼ cup of liquid (brewed Chai Up masala powder mix)
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Method:
- Start by preheating your oven 375°F or about 190°C.
- Heat up ½ cup of water in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Add a teaspoon of Chai Up’s Masala Powder Mix and brew it for at least 3 to 5 minutes.
- Sift the liquid in case there are any bits that wouldn’t dissolve.
- Whisk all the dry ingredients like the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl beat the egg with some of the water, oil, and the vanilla extract.
- Now combine both wet and dry ingredients and mix until everything is combined.
- Add ¼ cup of the masala chai you just brewed and mix in the batter. Make sure you’re scraping down the sides of the bowl so you don’t miss anything. Set the other ¼ cup aside for the glaze.
- Grease your donut baking pan with oil or butter so that the donuts can easily be removed from the mold later on.
- Fill the donut holes less than halfway full. You can use a spoon to pour over the batter, or for more accuracy you can use a piping bag.
- Bake the donuts for 10 to 15 minutes until the batter rises and the texture of the donut is light and springy to the touch.
- Remove the donuts and let them rest in the pan for a couple more minutes before you turn the pan upside down or pry the donuts out so that they can set.
- Now to make the glaze, start by sifting the powdered sugar.
- Slowly add in the ¼ cup of brewed Chai Up masala powder mix until you get a thin and liquidy consistency, use a little less than half the amount of powdered sugar you add to begin and slowly add more using tablespoons.
- Add the vanilla extract when you reach the perfect glaze consistency.
- Pop your donuts out of the mold pan and dip its top half in the glaze and repeat for each one.
